Biography

Corrette Ploem is a professor of health law at Amsterdam UMC and at the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam. In addition, Corrette serves as a scientific advisor to VBK. In this role, she strengthens VBK’s healthcare team. Corrette specialises in patients’ rights, data protection and privacy in healthcare, medical ethics, and the regulation of scientific research, screening and healthcare technology, including applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and eHealth in the healthcare sector.

In her academic work, she focuses on issues concerning how new technological innovations in healthcare can be designed in a legally and ethically responsible manner, with an eye on quality, safety and the legal protection of patients on the one hand, and on the position and responsibilities of healthcare institutions on the other.

As a professor, Corrette makes significant contributions to academic research in the field of health law. Not only does Corrette publish regularly in national and international academic journals in the field of health law, but she is also editor-in-chief of the Journal of Health Law and editor of various handbooks and collections in the field of health law, such as the Handbook of Health Law and the Basic Book on Ethics and Law in Healthcare. In addition, Corrette represents the Netherlands on the Board of Governors of the World Association for Medical Law.

As a researcher and project leader, Corrette has been involved in various legislative evaluations, including the third evaluation of the medical disciplinary law governed by the Individual Healthcare Professions Act.
